Master the ancient civilization strategy board game EPOS: A Gentes Game. Learn setup, turn structure, scoring, and winning tips in this concise guide.
Quick Answer
EPOS: A Gentes Game is a standalone civilization strategy game where you lead an ancient people through three eras, building structures, gaining influence, and scoring victory points. Win by focusing on balanced development and timing your era transitions.
What Makes EPOS Unique
EPOS: A Gentes Game is a Deluxe edition based on the best-selling GENTES by Stefan Risthaus, illustrated by Harald Lieske. It stands alone, so you don't need any other game to play. The box includes a set of 4 promo cards, adding variety from the start.
Unlike many civilization games, EPOS uses a card-driven action system where each player builds a personal tableau. The three-era structure keeps the game moving, and the Deluxe components enhance the tactile experience.
Common Mistakes New Players Make
New players often over-invest in one area, like military or culture, neglecting others. EPOS rewards balanced development because each era scores differently. Another pitfall is rushing through eras without building enough infrastructure—each era transition resets some abilities, so timing matters.
Also, don't ignore the promo cards included in the box. They offer unique abilities that can shift your strategy. Read them before your first game.
How to Play and Win EPOS: A Gentes Game
- Set Up the Game: Place the main board in the center. Each player chooses a civilization board and takes the corresponding tokens, cards, and starting resources. Shuffle the era decks (I, II, III) and place them face down. Give each player a starting hand of 3 cards from era I. Place the promo cards aside; shuffle them into the era I deck for your first game. Common mistake: forgetting to include the promo cards. They are part of the base game, not an expansion.
- Understand the Turn Structure: On your turn, play one card from your hand face up in front of you. Resolve its action: gain resources, build a structure, recruit a unit, or gain influence. Then draw a new card from the current era deck. You may also, once per turn, spend resources to advance your civilization on the main board. Checkpoint: You cannot hold more than 5 cards in hand at the end of your turn. Discard down if needed.
- Advance Through Eras: When the era I deck runs out, shuffle all played era I cards back into the deck and add era II cards. This triggers an era transition: reset your civilization's special ability marker, and score points for completed structures. Repeat for era III. The game ends after era III is exhausted. Common mistake: rushing to era II without building enough structures. Era I structures are cheaper and help you snowball.
- Score Victory Points: Victory points (VP) come from: building structures (each gives VP when built and again at era transitions), completing sets of different card types, holding influence tokens on the main board, and certain card effects. At the end of the game, add all VP from these sources. Highest total wins. Checkpoint: Don't ignore influence tokens on the main board. They provide end-game VP and can be contested by other players.
- Win with Balanced Strategy: To win, diversify your actions. Build at least one structure in each era to benefit from era transition scoring. Collect cards from at least three of the four types (military, culture, economy, politics) for set bonuses. Use influence to claim high-value spots on the main board early, but be prepared to defend them. Common mistake: focusing only on one card type. Set bonuses reward variety, and structures give steady VP regardless of your strategy.
