Compare the Terra Mystica Automa Solo Box and Big Box to decide whether you need a solo opponent or a complete collection. We break down contents, costs, and best fits.
Quick answer
If you already own Terra Mystica and want to play alone, buy the Automa Solo Box. If you are new to the game or want everything in one purchase, buy the Big Box.
What each box actually gives you
The Automa Solo Box is an expansion, not a standalone game. It requires Terra Mystica to play, and it adds a solo opponent with 10 different Automa factions and adjustable difficulty. You can use it with the base game or with Fire & Ice and Merchants of the Seas.
The Big Box is a complete collection of the Terra Mystica base game. It includes 20 factions (witches, darklings, dragon masters, and 17 others) and all the components needed to play. It does not include the Automa Solo Box, so solo play still requires that separate expansion.
The trade-off: cost vs completeness
The Automa Solo Box is a low-cost add-on for existing owners. At $12.19 (compared to a $19.99 list price), it is an easy way to unlock solo play without rebuying the base game. The catch: it is useless without Terra Mystica.
The Big Box is a larger investment at $91.49 (compared to $149.99 list price). It gives you the full game and all factions in one purchase, but it does not solve solo play on its own. If you want to play alone, you will still need the Automa Solo Box.
Key trade-offs
- Solo play: Automa Solo Box enables solo play; Big Box does not include solo rules or components. If solo is your priority, the Solo Box is mandatory.
- Base game required: Automa Solo Box requires Terra Mystica to use; Big Box includes the base game. Buy the Solo Box only if you already own the base game.
- Collection completeness: Big Box contains the base game and all 20 factions; Solo Box is an add-on with no base game components. Choose Big Box if you want everything in one purchase.
- Price: Solo Box is $12.19; Big Box is $91.49. Prices are current catalog prices. Budget buyers who own the base game should start with the Solo Box.
